Namibia
Namibia is a country in the southern part of the continent and has a desert coastline along the Atlantic Ocean. A broad plateau with mountains. 2 million people call Namibia home, and its capital city is Windhoek. Namibia has one of the world's more unequal income distributions - the top 10% of households make 65% of the national income. Many white Namibians use commercial farming of livestock as they own a high proportion of the country's land area; this inequity of land ownership is a source of political conflict. Namibia was formerly occupied by South Africa and earned its independence after the South-West Africa People's Organization (SWAPO) fought a successful guerilla war ending in 1988. In 1989 the first national assembly was won by Sam Nujoma, who was elected president. Over time Nujoma ruled more autocratically, and in 1999 he changed the constitution to allow himself to run for a third time. In 2004 another SWAPO member, Hifikenpunye Pohamba, won the presidency and was re-elected in 2009.
